Is Gandhian’s Talisman relevant today ………….

When I was in school, we were used NCERT book and every NCERT book has a special page in which , the Gandhi’s talisman was printed and we used to read it many times.  But I was not so much aware about that what actually Mr. Gandhi wants to say by this talisman.  Years has been gone and yesterday, when my daughter brought a book and when I was flipping the pages of that book, I saw this talisman once again.  I read it again after many years.  I felt very good and I was gone into deep thinking.  Now, somewhere, I felt that I am able to understand the meaning and importance of this talisman.

"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test : Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man [woman] whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him [her]. Will he [she] gain anything by it? Will it restore him [her] to a control over his [her] own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to swaraj [freedom] for the hungry and spiritually starving millions?  Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."”

Try to read it many times as you can , you feel something is melting  inside you and you will start recalling some incidents of your life and feel it.

Why I am illustrating this thought in this forum?  This is a big question.  But I feel, this talisman is strongly applicable in this corporate arena.  Think about it and you can feel the importance of this talisman.

This talisman can give you some guidelines to you whenever you are creating or implementing some policies or guidelines across the company and you have to think about the effect of policy to the lowest or bottom leveled employee of your company.  Although , I know, this is not very practical in today’s world but if you really want to make a company people centric and believe people are the best assets and every individual contribute a lot in the progress of the company then you realize the importance of this talisman.

My suggestion :  Read it once , think twice and take the best from it wherever you can.

Today is 29th October- A special day for computer Networking

We all are living in the era of computer networking and today, we cannot think to live without it.
This is the day in 1969, when the first ever computer to computer link was established on ARPANET ( Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) in US.

The first message which was transmitted between computers was , “Login” but only the word “ L” and “O” were successfully transmitted from host computer to another computer before crashing of the system but then after one hour, the message is successfully transmitted.

The first message on the ARPANET was sent by UCLA student programmer Charles S Kline at 10:30 pm on October 29, from the campus’ Boelter Hall to the Stanford Research Institute's SDS 940 host computer.

Another milestone occurred on Nov 22, 1977- The first date where three network transmission took place among SRI International, Menlo Park and University of Southern California via London , England and the network involved ARPANET , the bay area packet radio network and Atlantic Packet Satellite Network.

Rest is History now and we all are connected today because of this day.

Quality ..............Excellence of Actions

There are numbers of definitions given by people of quality  and all are correct as per circumstances and time.
Today , quality is not limited to a word , it becomes an essence of business management.
For me , quality is  a must tool to survive in this competitive world where there are many offerings in a same row.    So , quality of service or products give an edge to the  company above from the rest.
Quality is actually exceeding the customer’s expectations and converting the expectations into reality.  So , quality can be defined as :
Quality = Customer’s expectations or requirements / Customer’s experience with the products/ service.
Or Quality is a ratio between Customer’s requirements and actual experience with any service or product.  The ratio lower than 1 , resulting the customer delight and ratio greater than 1 , results customer’s dis-satisfaction.
Quality starts right from the beginning from understanding the customer’s requirements to converting them into reality to customer’s experience with the products or service.   Every single activity of an entire process can lead to customer’s dis-satisfaction.
Quality comes from the excellence of actions – every action whether it is small or big – directly or indirectly involved in the process matters.
Quality is a culture and it should be developed in every nook and corner of the company to its length and breadth.  All actions are to be aligned in such a manner that output/ result should be the best and customer’s should not be a satisfied customer- it should be Delighted customer.  A delighted customer’s is the key to a company or organization which has  the “KEY”  to open the locks of market.

What a management Lesson ? Bundle of green grass and Cows – Small story big Impact……….

Someone shared a video in facebook from youtube.  After seeing this video, I was speechless. Why?

In this video , there was a lady having four cows.  She used to earn the livelihood by selling the milk.  Till that time, it was OK and it is a simple management.

Turning point is : How she generate the second and regular income from her cows ? that is the real story.

This lady was seems very customary lady from any part of India.  In the morning, after milking from her cows she used to carry all her cows in a nearby hindu temple where devotees comes for pray.

Alongwith her cows, she used to carry bundles of green grass from her nearby places free of cost.  Now the real story starts:

She used to sit in a place nearby temple and there is belief in Hinduism that feeding a cow with green grass is a spiritual and noble work  as Hindu worship cows.  ( Business opportunity )

Now, she sells her green grass in small amount to the devotees and devotees easily offer the money for the grass.  Then the devotees offer this green grass to the cows.   Cows happily accept the green grass.  Devotees are happy for their work, cows are happy and the lady earns money for their livelihood. ( Converting the opportunity )

When her bundle of grasses comes to end, she took her cow to their home.

What a management lesson ?  have you read this story in any book of management ?  This is called business management.

I am really thankful and hats off to that person who share this video and update us that business management can be learn from anywhere and from anyone.   Business ideas are enormous , only need is – you have to identify them and convert them in real ground.

The conclusion and analysis of this story will be in next post.

Business Excellence – A key to get success in today’s competitive world ………

Business Excellence is a very broad term used in today’s corporate world.  But most of the people misunderstand it as – Business excellence is only limited to  increasing the profit or making a quality product.

Business excellence concept is emerged on late 80’s when the quality management systems are introduced in the industry.  Till late 90’s it was limited upto product quality by applying some basic rules of quality management systems principles.

I am practicing the quality management system in different industries for last 14 years and I strongly believe that quality management system is a part of Business Excellence which guides an organization to get success in the business. ISO 9001 QMS provide a strong methodology as PDCA ( Plan Do Check Act ) which was also known as Deming cycle.   These four steps are to be regularly monitored and action to be taken timely to get your business in track.   Keep a hawk eye to sense the changes in the market and try to make your customer a delighted customer.

Business Excellence starts from the inception of the company by deriving the vision, mission and goals of the company and it covers every nook & corner of the company and its execution to its accomplishment.

To get success in business , you have to align all the activities- minor or major  to a definite direction.  Every person/ resources  involved in your business process to be taken in your business excellence program.  There are several model available for business excellence but the key is :  every single activity of a business process is equally important and these to be treated with equal weightage . Treat your people as your best asset, develop and motivate them to use of their full potential  and make them an integral part of the organization.
